Recovery and Endurance

Pushing your limits? Try pushing your recovery too. Inflammation is your body's natural reaction to the stresses you put on it. That doesn't mean you have to like it. Or accept it.

High performance athletes exercise to their physical limits. Constantly.

Very high-intensity exercise paradigms are accompanied with the elevation of a specific set of cytokines that includes IL-6 and the unequivocally pro-inflammatory TNFα.  These chemicals  contribute to the immunocompromised and inflammatory state observed after extreme physical activity.

Specifically, repetitive bouts of intense exercise leads to microscopic muscle tears triggering an inflammatory response - delayed onset muscle soreness (DOMS).

Delayed-onset muscle soreness (DOMS) is a type of ultrastructural muscle injury. It manifests from eccentric or unfamiliar exercise and includes reduced force capacities, increased painful restriction of movement, stiffness, swelling, and joint dysfunction. Although DOMS is considered a mild form of injury, it is one of the most common reasons for compromised sportive performance. Although inflammation may be beneficial in the adaptive response to exercise, by the time DOMS sets in, those benefits are gone.

Reduced Immunity is also a well established consequence of high intensity exercise.

The harder and more often you train, the bigger the strain on your immune system. A compromised immune system makes you more susceptible to common viruses and bacteria being passed around.

In athletes, upper respiratory symptoms (URS) are most often related to common respiratory viruses, viral reactivation, allergic responses to aero allergens and exercise-related trauma to the integrity of lung membranes.

Recurrent and/or persistent respiratory illness negatively impacts the health and performance of athletes and preliminary studies show a pro-inflammatory response and a dysregulated anti-inflammatory cytokine (chemical) response to intense exercise as a possible mechanism of respiratory inflammation.

At Root Rescue Wellness, we deliver the power of roots to the people by leading the anti-inflammation conversation and democratizing performance for everyone.
